The ECU (European Currency Unit) was the predecessor of the Euro, the official accounting unit of the European Community. The designation of the currency was based on an old French coin. The ECU is therefore the direct predecessor to the euro.
The first ECU gold coin in 1987 in Belgium, on the occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome and the founding of the European Economic Community (EEC) issued.
On the face was shown in this vintage Karl V (Karl der Große). Other famous personalities have included Prinz Albert II., King Baudouin (1989 and 1990) and the Belgian President of the European Commission 1993rd.
