With the regulation of the transforming of the postal service, the citizens of Portugal in 1851 got informed about the use of adhesive postmarks.
On the 1st July 1853, 13 years after the first stamp in the world, the first Portuguese stamp was issued. It was a brand with a value of five Reis with the portrait of the Queen Mary II, which was designed by Francisco Borja Freire.
